On January 8, the Television Academy announced the creation of the Legacy Award, which will debut in 2026 and recognize television programs that have made a profound and lasting impact on audiences and remain relevant to society, culture and the industry. Eligibility is measured through a clearly defined series of requirements.

Supernatural, remarkably, generated 327 episodes across 15 seasons and is considered the longest-running, live-action fantasy/horror series in American television history. That much creative output from one source made choosing episodes to showcase for this project exceedingly difficult. How do you narrow meaningful choices from such abundance?

From the deep well of options available, refining the list had to begin with what legacy means to the Television Academy and how those standards are measured. The Supernatural Legacy Series will, through a set of feature article reviews and focused analysis of craftsmanship, highlight the ways in which this show has been able to meet the identified requirements. These reviews begin by first looking at the prominent categories of eligibility, which are;

Innovation

Innovation in genre television is so much more than taking risks. It’s taking risks while maintaining audience trust. It is about expanding the boundaries of what recognized conventions could do with story and presentation. It endeavors to challenge audience expectations while using narrative, craft and technical strategies to disrupt, blend or redefine. It moves beyond storytelling formulas and established tropes. It is creating fresh, thought-provoking stories that delight and entertain while pushing the boundaries of the genre in which they are made.

Longevity / Endurance

Longevity is a measurement of time. It refers to the ability of a show to last for many seasons while maintaining a loyal audience, especially if the show evolves over its lifespan. While longevity and endurance are different, they are intrinsically connected. Endurance leans more towards what a show survives beyond time; continued relevance, emotional attachment, cultural memory and the ability to attract new viewers. The implication is that the show endures, becoming a lasting cultural fixture that retains deep loyalty.

They typically make questionable decisions driven by personal reasons placing them in an anti-hero category, while making choices that move the plot of the story. And typically become lasting, recognizable cultural touchstones.

Audience Appeal

Audience appeal is what a series has in order to attract and maintain a viewer base. It is done by creating complex, relatable and multi-dimensional characters who move through an invented world. Appeal is baked right in when a show delivers high-quality visual effects and cinematic aesthetics. Most of all, fans are drawn in by fresh, surprising, complex narratives that absorb them emotionally, intellectually and ultimately reward them with good storytelling. And audience appeal is what transforms sustained viewership into a loyal, invested fandom.

These requirements form the foundation for how the Supernatural Legacy Series can best illustrate the ways in which the show met the eligibility criteria in practical terms.
